yikes! I wouldnt’ want to drive on those!
....but I’d sure be willling to spin the tyres while stationary for a bit

That wasn’t because of tire stretching. 225 on 8” rim is fine. Thats because either the alignment is out of whack, the wheel bearings are, or it’s just some terrible old tires. Don’t drive on those though.

This will fix that.

Weather or not you know it, it was a stretch as the other tires were 245 and square.

I was gonna say the same thing. 225’s are 8.85” wide on a 8” wheel that is not stretched. That is well within the tire specs. It was for sure some other problem that caused this.

In theory.

looks just worn to me.

Its hard to tell from the angle but all along where the sidewall transitions to flat there is a continuous crack followed by that big one which exists thanks to too small tires.

Honestly a better theory is those are really old worn out tires.

Its our money, who the fuck are you to tell us what to do? I still love doing it.

I didnt tell what to do, I showed your the consequences for streching a tire(however rare). Way to be fuckin civil about your hatred for peaple disliking stretchs(and the inherent dangers).

It was clear that this tire cracked due to the stress of being stretched. However old it was, had it been on a proper sized rim it wouldnt have cracked all across its sidewall; Fact.

So your saying this is a premature failure, or what’s your point? Are you upset you didn’t get more life out of them?
![]() 07/16/2015 at 11:33 |

My point was that a stretch can cause premature failure. I guess I was kinda vague but the failure that wouldve occured is a detachment of the sidewall and the top surface of the tire. The importance of this is that (for the most part) a stretch is the only way to cause that sort of catastrophic failure.

A 225/40r18 tire mounted on an 18x8” wheel is not stretched. That tire may have been previously mounted on a different wheel, but on that particular wheel it was definitely not stretched.

Uh, VW does 225s on all of their 17 and 18 inch wheels which are 7.5 or 8 inches wide STOCK... that is not a stretch at all. I’d bet the previous owner hit something and threw the alignment out of whack and kept driving it regardless

Im wrong,
Some form of excessive pull from the tread sides to bead was happening, maybe it has to do with the profile.

I’d bet that it had to do with the super weak sidewalls (88Y is pretty weak) and the fact that they are probably 200 treadwear tires
